Performance is the final dimension of dance technique. What is it ??
For you as a spectator... performance is what dazzles you, what leaves your breathless. It's what makes you think, "How can she do that? This dancer is "wow".
As a spectator, you might think that performance is the pinnacle of technique. The ultimate stage in learning to dance, excellence in execution.
But what exactly does performance mean to you as a dancer?
For you as a dancer.... it depends on the kind of person you are, It depends on your character.
If you just like to push yourself, performance can be a personal challenge. Performance then exists in relation to your own limits. Your performance consists of going beyond your limits to progress, to give the best of yourself. To feel good about yourself. To feel satisfied with your effort. For the satisfaction of work well done.
If your nature leads you to measure yourself against others, that attitude is just as commendable.
Here, in the homeland of 'Ori Tahiti, we are used to saying that dancing is a way of "regaining self-esteem". Taking part in a dance competition is also a way of regaining or gaining self-esteem.
Competition, whether virtual or face-to-face, is a way of recognising the artist that you are.
These two attitudes towards performance are perfectly justified.
Can you find out what makes you tick?
Do you want to sign up to measure yourself against other dancers, or do you want to sign up to challenge yourself ?
Do you tell yourself "I'm signing up for Heiva Digital because I want to measure my level against the other dancers? I want to be the best I can be, to win.
Or do you tell yourself: "I'm entering to have an opportunity to train, to progress. So that my video shows the fruits of my effort and creativity.
Both attitudes are perfectly commendable. In both cases, you're sharing your dance with the whole world.
Being clear with yourself about your attitude towards performance will help you a lot on your dance path..
Your conception of performance for yourself will guide your choreographic creation, your choices and your expression in dance.
Of course, it's up to you whether to hear this or not . Above all :
