Ori Tahiti accepts all body types. Including bodies that don't meet the usual standards in the world of Western dance.
Are you short or round? Do you think you don't meet the current aesthetic criteria? Or do you think you're too old?
Don't hesitate: the 'Ori Tahiti is for you.
Tahitian dance admits bodies of all shapes and ages to its schools and troupes.
Excessive thinness is a notion that originated in Europe.
In the traditional culture of Tahiti, known at the time of contact with the West, feminine curves were a criterion of great beauty. Young girls from good families were "put out to pasture" away from the sunlight, in order to keep their complexion as fair as possible.
To be beautiful, they had to be well-folded and not have too dark a complexion.
This cultural trait can still be seen today in our schools and troops. In particular, the Heiva is an opportunity to see all kinds of people dance.
NONAHERE GROUP OF DANCE AT THE HEIVA
Our dance schools have groups of "mums" and sometimes "tupuna" (seniors). Often the groups at the Heiva include a part of the show performed by the mamas and tupuna.
So if you're still hesitating because you don't think you're the ideal dancer, just go for it, you've got nothing to fear and you'll only be assessed on your dancing.
